Nine Grays

Marchant mixed a single gray and then changed what was underneath it nine times. Same pigment, same brush, same hand - chalk ground, lead ground, oiled ground, raw linen, and so on down the list, which was printed on the wall at the entrance to room II.

Hung at 150cm and lit flat, the nine read as nine different colours. That was the argument.
